Friedrich Schaller passed away on May 5th 2018, aged 97.

It is with deep regret that we must announce the decease of
Univ. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Friedrich Schaller. 
From 1968 to 1984, Schaller was a full professor of zoology at the University of Vienna. He died in Vienna on May 5th, 2018.

Nachruf für Univ. Prof. Dr. Friedrich Schaller

Mit tiefer Betroffenheit müssen wir das Ableben von Univ. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Friedrich Schaller bekannt geben, der im 98 Lebensjahr am 5. Mai 2018 in seiner Wohnung in Wien verstorben ist. Er starb in seinem 98. Lebensjahr

Sein unermüdliches Engagement in diesen Jahren bewirkte eine wesentliche fachliche Erweiterung der Zoologie in Wien und war entscheidend für die Errichtung des Biozentrums Althanstraße. Sein wissenschaftliches Werk ist vor allem mit der Entdeckung der indirekten Spermatophorenübertragung bei verschiedenen Boden-Arthropoden und bioakustischer Forschung an tropischen Fröschen und Fischen verbunden.

Mit Schaller verlieren wir eine Person, die in seinem Leben und akademischen Wirken stets von Humanismus und Aufklärung geleitet war. In diesem Sinne ist auch sein großer Einsatz für die Ausbildung der Studierenden des Lehramtsstudiums Biologie zu verstehen.
